Delegation “Our Lady of Zarvanytsia”

Ukraine

Ten years after the foundation of the Institute of the Incarnate Word, the first two missionaries temporarily came to Ukraine in the city of Lviv, and in 1995 the first official mission started in the city of Ivano-Frankivsk. From 1998 the novitiate is opened to welcome the local vocations. Three other missions then started in the cities of Dubové, Transcarpathia (western Ukraine), Skadovsk (near the Black Sea) and Vynnitsia (central Ukraine). Today there is also a minor seminary in Ivano-Frankivsk and the Servants of the Lord and of the Virgin of Matarà have different houses, among them charity houses. The Delegation arranges various apostolic works for the faithful of the parishes (6 in total) as well as for the numerous members of the Third Order: summer camps for children, teenagers, men and women.

The missionaries also organize pilgrimages to the Holy Land and the holy places in Europe, help in the Diocesan Seminary with lessons and confessions, preach the Spiritual Exercises throughout the year to lay people and religious and spiritual retreats in the diocesan parishes. One of the priests is director of the diocesan Radio "Dzvony" in Ivano-Frankivsk. After the novitiate period, the future Ukrainian seminarians move to the International Seminary in Italy to continue their studies. They have the possibility to form in their own Ukrainian-byzantine rite with proper subjects such as the history of Oriental Church or Byzantine religious chant, some of them study in the Orientalium (the school of Catholic Oriental Rites in Rome). They also celebrate their own Liturgy (Holy Mass, Lauds and Vespers) some days a week, besides the prayer in Latin Roman Rite with the whole community. Once a year they also move to Rome to the Byzantine Church of Saint Sophia for the celebration of Easter with the Ukrainians living in Rome.
